Many of the disability rights workshops offered by Equip for Equality's Training Institute for Disability Rights and the Illinois ADA Project are now available online. Illinois Legal Aid Online, a website sponsored by the Illinois Institute of Technology, has videotaped workshops on such topics as Ticket to Work rights and benefits; disability rights in employment, special education, transportation, and voting; disability issues relating to guardianship; and many more.
The online workshops have a downloadable video, which is divided into chapters; a copy of the complete text of the workshop; and handouts associated with the workshop. Illinois Legal Aid Online has a wide range of legal information and resources on its website, including many sections specificially for people with disabilities and their family members.
To view the workshops, go to Equip for Equality's training seminars page and follow the links, or go the Illinois Legal Aid website and type in any subject area.
The Resource Guide for Persons with Disabilities (PDF) has been updated and is now available through the Chicago Bar Association (CBA) and Equip for Equality. This is the fourth edition of the popular guide, which was last updated in 2001. Equip for Equality partnered with the Young Lawyers Section Mental Health and Disability Law Committee of the Chicago Bar Association to ensure that the guide's information was current and accurate, and that it covered a broad scope of resources. Collaboration between the three organizations began in 1996 as a means to respond to needs expressed by individuals with disabilities, their families and service providers who stated that they lacked information about the seemingly countless disability-related services available in Illinois. Equip for Equality's Sarah Price co-chaired the guide committee with Leah Wade of the Illinois Attorney General's Disability Rights Bureau.
The guide lists approximately 300 agencies that provide an array of services, such as legal and advocacy services, assistive technology, transportation, recreation, education and employment. The publication's back two pages contain a "Quick Reference Guide" for easy access to useful government telephone numbers. A large-print version is also available. A limited number of guides can be obtained for free by contacting the CBA Legal Bookstore at (312) 554-2130 or Equip for Equality. The guide is also posted on the websites of the CBA and Equip for Equality. Several volunteers helped the committee update the guide, which was funded by the CBA Young Lawyers Section and the American Bar Association Young Lawyers Division.
