Benetta Gaye Thomas joined Equip for Equality as the fiscal manager reporting to the chief financial officer. She will be responsible for accounting operations. Benetta comes to Equip for Equality with 15 years of experience in nonprofit accounting. Most recently she worked for the University of Chicago as the finance manager with responsibilities for federal, state and local financial reporting; grants and contract compliance; budgeting, forecasting, analysis and reporting experience. She has a proven record of controlling finances and increasing staff productivity. She has been a strong leader, communicator and problem solver and has accomplished a great deal in the areas of strategic planning and budgeting. Benetta is a welcome addition to the staff.
Karen J. Holliday joined Equip for Equality's Legal Advocacy Department on June 16 as an administrative assistant. Karen has had extensive experience in this capacity in the corporate sector as well as with various nonprofit organizations that provide outreach and services to the homeless, the disenfranchised and individuals with disabilities. She also has experience working with the federal government, medical institutions and the telecommunications industry. She will provide support to individuals in the legal and policy departments. Equip for Equality welcomes her.
This summer, the Legal Advocacy Program welcomes five legal interns who will assist the program's lawyers and advocates. Jessica Kaiser is a PILI Fellow from Kirkland & Ellis and is attending Chicago Kent Law School. Cindy Smith is a third-year student at Syracuse University in New York who will graduate this December from a joint program with a J.D. and an M.S. in education, with a concentration in disability studies. Bridget Norton has completed her second year of law school at DePaul University College of Law. Henry Chou is a student at Northwestern University School of Law and will graduate in May 2006. Michael George Soukup has completed his first year at Loyola University, Chicago School of Law.
Kevin Irvine, a senior advocate at Equip for Equality, was selected as a member of the 2006 class of the Leadership Greater Chicago Fellows (LGC) program. LGC brings together young leaders nominated by business, government and civic leaders from communities throughout the region. The Fellows Program is a yearlong commitment with a structured curriculum in an interactive process. Fellows continue their careers while in the program, attending meetings, field trips and other activities that cover a wide range of topics.
