Fact Sheets to Promote Self-Advocacy

Graphic of Equip for Equality Fact SheetsEquip for Equality believes that people with disabilities can often be their own best advocates to address legal issues that arise in their lives. In order to be effective self-advocates, it is crucial to be informed and up-to-date on the laws and options that affect your choices. Accordingly, Equip for Equality has developed a series of fact sheets that provide concise and accurate legal rights information in an easy-to-understand format. These fact sheets cover a broad range of topics with useful specific content written to provide self-advocacy guidance. Because Congress recently reauthorized the federal special education law and changed a number of key provisions, Equip for Equality has developed numerous fact sheets covering a variety of special education topics, including Assistive Technology, Records Access, Discipline, Due Process Hearings, Early Intervention, Remedies, Suspension and Alternate Placements, and Transportation.

In response to frequent questions about the rights of people with mental illness and developmental disabilities living in institutions and other settings, Equip for Equality has also developed a series of fact sheets focusing on rights under the Illinois Mental Health and Developmental Disabilities Code and other laws. Topics addressed by these fact sheets include Advance Directives, Rights in a Mental Health or Developmental Disability Facility, Treatment Plans and Access to Records, and Self-Advocacy.

The area of discrimination continues to evolve in the courts, and Equip for Equality has developed a series of fact sheets on a variety of discrimination topics, including Transportation, Employment Discrimination, Reasonable Accommodations, Where to File a Discrimination Case, Documenting Discrimination, and Disclosure of Disability-Related Information.

All Equip for Equality fact sheets can be found in the Resource Center of Equip for Equality's website or can be requested by calling Equip for Equality at (800) 537-2632 (Voice) or (800) 610-2779 (TTY).

Equip for Equality believes that these fact sheets will help people with disabilities and their families better advocate for their rights. Suggestions for new fact sheets or comments about existing sheets should be sent to contactus@equipforequality.org.
