Examples of AT Cases & Services
Examples of Assistive Technology (AT) Project Cases and Services include:
- A client called Equip for Equality because the Division of Rehabilitation Services (DRS) counselor would not authorize payment for a heavy-duty wheelchair base and elevating lift for her wheelchair. Equip for Equality represented her at a hearing to contest the DRS decision.
- Twins with Rett Syndrome were not being provided with appropriate AT devices/services to meet their educational needs. Equip for Equality represented the twins at a due process hearing and are now advocating on their behalf in federal court.
- A woman was denied access to a bowling alley because the owner refused to install a ramp so she could get up a nine-inch step to the lanes and refused to make the restroom accessible. Equip for Equality is pursuing access for our client before the Human Rights Commission.
- A recent case against the Chicago Transit Authority has resulted in greater access to public transportation for people with disabilities and incorporates such AT solutions as rehabbed elevators and automated communication systems for riders who are blind or deaf.
- Equip for Equality is representing a blind individual in federal court to obtain talking software as a reasonable job accommodation denied by his employer.
- Equip for Equality routinely advocates for AT evaluations and the provision of appropriate AT for students so that they can benefit from their education.
Your problem may be like one of the issues described above, or you may have another issue, such as having Medicaid or Medicare deny your AT request, or perhaps you need help in getting a PASS (Plan for Achieving Self Support) through the Social Security Administration to help pay for needed AT. If you need help with any issue involving AT, please contact Equip for Equality and let us see how we can help you.
