Examples of Latinos with Disabilities Advocacy Cases & Services

  • A Hispanic mother contacted Latino Advocacy about her seven-year-old boy who had been placed in a class for children with profound cognitive impairments. The mother could not understand why her son was in such a class, because she felt he was fully capable of learning. Ms. Puente requested a complete re-evaluation and it was determined that the child had severe hearing loss. At the re-testing it was determined that the child functioned in the normal range of intelligence, but because of his hearing impairment, his language development was delayed. As a result of Latino Advocacy's intervention and the evaluations, the boy will now attend his home school where he will enjoy a more inclusive environment with his peers. He will also be provided more speech and language services appropriate for his disability.
  • Despite repeated evaluations, an eight-year-old Hispanic boy with a history of school failures was never found eligible to receive special-education services. After consultation with the family, Latnio Advocacy recommended an evaluation from the University of Illinois, Chicago, Developmental Clinic. It was determined that the child needed speech and language therapy and social-work services and that the child's medical status needed to be further explored because the boy's allergies may have been interfering with his ability to focus in class.
