Special Projects

The Public Policy Program has also designed and conducted several major studies focusing on broad issues facing people with disabilities in order to promote systemic change in state policy in the disability area. Those studies include:

  • The Community Integration Policy Project was a 50-state study that investigated how states were providing services to people with developmental disabilities and how deinstitutionalization took place in those states that successfully increased community integration.
  • The Restraint Monitoring and Policy Project conducted an extensive review of the use of restraints on residents of state mental health facilities.
  • The Illinois Guardianship Reform Project documented the findings and recommendations of its multi-disciplinary task force for improving the adult guardianship system in Illinois.

Work continues on implementation of the recommendations set forth in these reports.
