Other Bus Travel & People with Disabilities

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) is a civil rights law and does not require that transportation service be provided in every community where people live. However, if over-the-road bus service is provided (also known as "motorcoaches," Greyhound, etc.), it must comply with ADA requirements for accessibility for people with disabilities. The ADA covers over-the-road bus vehicles, transportation facilities (bus stations, etc.), and bus service. This includes both large and small fixed route, charter, tour and other demand responsive motorcoach companies.

Service requirements that apply to all over-the-road bus service:

  • Cannot refuse to serve a person with a disability;
  • Cannot charge higher fares or fees for carrying individuals with disabilities and their equipment than are charged to other persons;
  • Must allow service animals to ride with passengers with disabilities; and
  • Must provide an accessible bus upon request and with 48 hours advance notice.
