Equip for Equality Celebrates its 20th Anniversary While Raising Much Needed Funds
Our warmest regards and greatest appreciation goes out to all those who joined in celebration at Equip for Equality's 20th Anniversary Celebration, An Evening for Equality-Celebrating 20 Years this past October 7th. Equip for Equality realized its most successful fundraiser raising over $147,000 in an exciting celebration gathering close to 400 guests and participants at the Renaissance Chicago Hotel.
Equip for Equality was honored to have U.S. Senator Barack Obama (view bio) as the evening's featured speaker who spoke candidly about his relationship to the disability community and its movement and progress towards full inclusion of children and adults with disabilities into society. Curtis L. Decker from the National Disability Rights Network (view bio) remarked on the national Protection and Advocacy System and its origin and applauded Equip for Equality for its leadership as a member of this network. The 2005 Civic Leadership Award was given to Mayor Richard M. Daley and Maggie Daley (view bio) for their longstanding commitment to persons with disabilities in Chicago. The award was accepted by the Commissioner of the Mayor's Office for People with Disabilities, Karen Tamley.
Funds from the event will go directly towards supporting our work to provide advocacy services, training, community integration, and personal safety to children and adults with disabilities in the state of Illinois. This year, Equip for Equality is embarking on a major initiative to develop a special education clinic that will provide legal and advocacy services for thousands of parents in Illinois who seek appropriate schooling for their children with disabilities. Money raised at the special event each year is critical to the advancement of our mission and the fulfillment of our goals.
