Report Abuse, Neglect, and Exploitation

It is important to report abuse, neglect, and exploitation because it often helps many more people than just the person you call about.

Below is a list of organizations you can call for different kinds of abuse, neglect, and exploitation. It’s okay if you aren’t sure which number to call. Whoever you call will help you get to the right place.

Adult Protective Services

Call Adult Protective Services at 866-800-1409 if the person has a disability or is over 60-years-old and is being abused or neglected.

This is a good number to call if the person lives in their own home or with family or friends, or a home not managed by a licensed provider. It is also a good choice if the person lives in a CILA or nursing home AND the abuser does not work there.

Office of Inspector General

Call the Office of Inspector General at 800-368-1463 if the person lives in a home or facility, or works through a program where DHS gives services to people with intellectual or developmental disabilities or mental illness, and the facility or staff member engages in abuse or neglect.

Illinois Department of Public Health

Call the Illinois Department of Public Health at 800-252-4343 if the person is being abused or neglected by the facility or staff at a nursing home, assisted living facility, shared housing, sheltered care, Veterans’ Home, SODC, or Intermediate Care Facility for Individuals with Developmental Disabilities, or hospital.

Department of Children and Family Services

Call the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services at 800-252-2873 if a child under the age of 18 is being abused or neglected.

Illinois Healthcare and Family Services

Call Illinois Healthcare and Family Services at 844-528-8444 if the person is being abused or neglected by the facility or staff at a supportive living facility.

Other Places to Call

The police: Call 911 for immediate danger and local police department in all other cases to report crimes.

National Domestic Violence Hotline: Call 800-799-7233 to get tools and support to help people with disabilities live free of abuse.

Illinois Domestic Violence Hotline: Call or text 877-863-6338 or go to www.ilcadv.org to get help if a family member or partner is being abusive.

Rape Crisis Centers: Call 800-656-4673 or go to www.icasa.org if the abuse is sexual.

Equip for Equality: Call 800-537-2632 to talk about lots of different legal problems related to disabilities, including abuse and neglect.
