Our Story / Priorities

Our priorities

Equip for Equality tries to give legal advocacy to as many people as possible. We also try to make systems-change reform through legal and legislative methods, as well as our role as an independent watchdog. Every three years, we adopt a three-year plan and priorities that helps us know what to focus on.

Current priorities

Every year, we ask people in Illinois to tell us what they think Equip for Equality should focus on. Based on the feedback we get, our current priorities are:

  • Promoting community integration of people with disabilities in all aspects of community life.
  • Fighting discrimination with civil rights laws.
  • Supporting students’ rights to get an education that meets their needs.
  • Supporting people’s rights to make choices about their personal lives.
  • Making sure people are safe from abuse and neglect.
  • Making sure people get the services and support they need.

We have a large mission compared to other advocacy groups. We provide a wide range of advocacy programs and legal services statewide.  We serve people with all types of disabilities living alone and in public and private community housing and institutions.

What do you think?

Every three years, we start a new three-year plan and priorities. Every year, we ask people in Illinois what they think we should focus on.

Read our current Priorities and Plan here. Then let us know what you think using one of the methods below. We will think about your suggestions the next time we hold meetings asking the public what should be in our plan and priorities.
